About Me

My name is Mark Gearhart. I specialize in Sybase products, with a focus on Sybase ASE and the Sybase Replication Server.

I’ve been right smack in the middle of Sybase for quite a while. It all started back in 1990 when my employer at that time, Harris Corporation (which later became GE Energy Systems) did a competitive analysis of Sybase vs. Oracle for electric utility applications, and Sybase won. I was part of that evaluation team, and was quickly immersed in the guts of ASE, writing queries and configuring dataservers. Fast forward 22 years, and I’m in still the guts of ASE, and still learning new things every day.

In summary, I have the following long-standing experience with Sybase products:

• I am a former Sybase employee.
• I am a current SAP GSS employee, specializing in Sybase.
• I am an expert in database design.
• I am an expert in database applications.
• I have worked as DBA, architect, and developer.
• I work primarily with Sybase ASE and Repserver.
• I am familiar with Sybase IQ and ASA.
• I am familiar with Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server.
• I am a Certified Sybase Professional Developer and Adminstrator.
• I contribute frequently to the International Sybase Technical Journal.

Over the years I’ve lived and worked in various locations in the US, as well as Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, and Mexico. Right now, the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina is my home base. For further details about me, please by all means visit the About Mark Gearhart section of this site.

About Sybase

Over the last 27 years, Sybase has been through some tremendous ups and downs. Right now, I’d like to think Sybase is in a tremendous up-swing now that they are about to become a database platform for SAP’s huge array of products and solutions, starting with Business Suite due out soon. This, in my opinion, is great news for those who have dilligently worked with the Sybase products over the years. I have gotten a lot of satisfaction and productivity when developing application which run on the Sybase databases, and am very happy with the technical excellence demonstrated by the Sybase community as well as the 60+ Sybase products.
